Ottawa Water Reclamation Facility

Opened in 2004, the Ottawa Water Reclamation Facility was designed by Professional Engineering Consultants (PEC) at a cost of approximately $10 million. The facility uses an oxidation ditch treatment process, known for its efficiency and reliability. With a design capacity of 2.68 million gallons per day (MGD)—double the capability of the city’s previous plant—the facility is built to serve Ottawa’s long-term growth and environmental needs.

The treatment process includes biological nutrient removal, clarification, and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection to ensure high-quality water is safely returned to the Marais des Cygnes River. An integrated odor control system helps the plant remain a good neighbor in the surrounding community.

Through advanced technology and careful operation, the facility protects public health, supports sustainable growth, and safeguards Ottawa’s natural resources for future generations.

Wastewater Collection

The City of Ottawa’s Wastewater Collection Division maintains a vital system that includes 61 miles of sanitary sewer lines and 11 lift stations spread across the community. These lift stations are maintained by plant personnel to ensure wastewater is reliably transported to the treatment facility.

To keep the system efficient and dependable, the division performs regular maintenance and partners with contractors when sewer depths or urgent needs exceed city equipment capabilities. On average, more than 650 feet of sewer line have been replaced or upgraded each year over the past five years.

An ongoing Inflow and Infiltration (I/I) reduction program further protects the system. Each year, crews clean over 40,000 feet of sewer line, televise more than 15,000 feet, and complete infrastructure improvements such as manhole replacements and grade adjustments. These proactive efforts reduce stormwater intrusion, extend the system’s life, and safeguard the city’s investment in critical infrastructure.

Together, these efforts ensure reliable service for residents, protect public health, and support the long-term sustainability of Ottawa’s wastewater infrastructure.
