PLANNING COMMISSION 

 

LEGAL AUTHORITY: KSA 12-701, City of Ottawa Code, 1982, 5-401 

3-year term, 2 consecutive terms 

City Residency Requirement for five positions,  

6th and 7th positions must live outside City limits, but within 3 miles * 

 

FUNCTION: The role of the Planning Commission is to provide comprehensive planning of development, recommendations on redevelopment, annexation and rezoning requests. The Planning Commission should be a positive influence for guiding residential, commercial and industrial development. Members of the Planning Commission should be visionary and proactive in their deliberations. 

MEETINGS: Second Wednesday, each month, 7:00 pm; Last Thursday, each month, 12:00 Noon

BOARD OF ZONING APPEALS

 

The function of the Board of Zoning Appeals is to assist citizens by providing the following

​

  • Appeal Process is the process used where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination made by the Zoning Administrator in the enforcement of the Zoning Regulations. (Zoning Regulations Article 25-2)

  • Variance is used to identify topographical conditions that zoning regulations prohibit. (Zoning Regulations Article 25-3)

  • Exceptions provision to grant exceptions to the zoning regulations. (Zoning Regulations Article 25-4)

Board of Zoning Appeals Commissioners

The Board of Zoning Appeals is a five member group that is appointed by the City Commission to make decisions on appeals, exceptions, and variances. Meetings are held on an as needed basis.

ACCESSIBILITY ADVISORY BOARD

LEGAL AUTHORITY:  City of Ottawa Ordinance No. 3835-13

3-year term, no residency requirement

(Charter Board 1, 2, and 3-year terms)

 

FUNCTION:  The role of the Accessibility Advisory Board is to advise and make recommendations to the City Commission on matters of accessibility in City buildings, properties and/or green spaces; to provide technical assistance to the City on matters related to the disabled population, to serve as advocates for citizens with disabilities; and to serve as a resource on policy and/or procedures for members of the City Commission and for City staff.
