Topeka, Kan. – Chief of Police for the Ottawa Police Department Dennis Butler was recognized this week as State-Level Ally of the Year by the Kansas Coalition Against Sexual and Domestic Violence (KCSDV) at KCSDV’s 15th Annual Awards Ceremony and Luncheon in Topeka.
Beginning February 26 through March 9, The Ottawa Police Department will join other Law Enforcement agencies in Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma to stop what has been an epidemic for the past several years.  In 2015, 13 teens lost their lives due to car crashes in Kansas; 40% of those teens were not properly restrained.
For the past few months the Ottawa Police Department has trained a new employee responsible for parking enforcement in the Central Business District.  During the training period, only warning citations were issued for parking violations. Beginning today, regular citations will be issued for parking violations.
The infrastructure projects for the new Holiday Inn Express project are anticipated to begin in the next month. The City of Ottawa, New Generation Construction, Killough Construction, and Flory Backhoe Inc., KDOT, Bartlett & West Engineering, and utility representatives held a preconstruction conference on Wednesday as the last step in the process before construction begins. The project is expected to begin in late February.
City commissioners have approved naming two of the new basketball courts in the Ottawa Teen Park for the 1971 and 2013 state basketball championship teams and a new pickleball court for the late John “Ed” Taylor, former county commissioner.
The City Finance Department will not be reading water meters due to the extremely cold weather forecast, and will instead be estimating the water portion of the utility bills.  Director of Finance Scott Bird stated, "Because of the frigid temperatures the city will be estimating water readings. 
The City of Ottawa, Kansas, is hereby soliciting statements of experience, qualifications and interest from airport consultants for the following project at the Ottawa Municipal Airport (OWI). The projects listed below are part of the Airport Capital Improvement Plan (ACIP) that was prepared for the FAA by Benesch & Co. The current ACIP is available upon request. Subject to  receipt of  federal and/or Kansas Department of Transportation, Division of Aviation, funding these projects may include the following:
The City of Ottawa is accepting applications for the City's Winter Warmth Assistance program until December 1, 2017.  Winter assistance will be provided for up to 50% of electric charges only, not to exceed $75.00 per billing cycle.
 Improvements are set to begin Monday, October 16th on the East 15th Street Bicycle and Sidewalk Project This is a joint project between the City and the Kansas Department of Transportation, with KDOT being the managing entity.
